I am looking for a CD transport. I have between $2K and $2.5K. I was looking at a European unit, but it is heavy, and shipping is so exspensive, that if it ever had to go back for a repair it would cost a fortune to ship it back round trip. So any suggestions? Thank you all very much.
I can recommend either of these old Sony machines: CDP779ES or CDP707ES.
Make sure the laser is good.
Should be able to find for MUCH less than $2k.
Generally speaking, "heavy is good" for this.

My friend has Musical Fidelity M1 CDT and it sounds very nice with their matching DAC.
But I am honestly incapable of telling the difference between the sound of transports, unless they produce errors, so just my 2cents.

Have you considered an old Theta Data Basic or BasicII? They are still around on the used market for not much. They used the CDM-9 laser, which is reliable.
Also, if you are in no hurry, you can wait for Salar's project.

Yes I have heard of the Shiga, and the Quantum. I have my order in for the first Quantum off the line. There was some confusion about shipping, but that has been worked out, and I will be getting a new Quantum soon. I had the shiga here, so I know about how it should sound. I have checked out other new units, and nothing touch's the Quantum at twice the price. Tibi has done a wonderful job of designing this transport. Anyone looking for a killer transport at a great price, should consider the Quantum. I never thought a transport would make much of a difference. But when I got my Shiga, it didn't have any of the CD mechanics mods done yet. As I added the mods to the CD mechanics I couldn't believe the improvements. And Tibi says he has added more mods to the unit. I messed up my Shiga doing some mods and sent it back for Tibi to fix. In the mean time Tibi finished the enclosure so I decided to just have him send me back a complete working Quantum transport, and be done fooling with it myself. I am so excited. I can hardly wait.
I suggest a SHIGA also! And tray the Marantz cd94 mkII... sound is wonderful. or PHilips cd880 bot have a CDM1 mkII great wonderful driver....on secondhand market?

Besides the problem that the laser diode might fail one day, I would go with an old CD-Player- I am just playing around with some second generation Sony players from 1985. They do not have digital out, but this can be added using a
digital transmitter from TI.

The mod I made can be made on any Sony Player from the wake of the CD era. The only machine I was not to mod yet is a CDP-101, because its clock
is not a multiple / dividable of the 16.9344 mhz a digital transmitter needs.
I have written this many times, mechanical quality of many early players is superb. As one example, the optics of many early generation players are much better sealed from dust than later laser units.
They often have a second lens beyond the "moving lens" that does the sealing.
Later designs were simply about cutting corners.
Bottom line is mechanics had to be set up to properly read a disc and therefor be reliable.

The best I heard was Audiomeca Mephisto. You may find one going for around what you are ready to pay, but even if the price was double, it would still be a steal...
For $2k you could find something 80s/90s exotic like Barclay transport:
