Calling CD/SACD Laser experts

Hello,

Attempting to fix an Onkyo DV-SP1000 that no longer reads CDs. Could read DVDs/SACDs. I ordered a new laser claiming to be Genuine sony, but finding it doesn't work. (yep, I desoldered the 2 blobs and was anal about static). The laser unit in question is a Sony KHM-280AAA

Unforutnately, since the new laser didn't work, I played with it's pots before taking baseline measurements, and used the old pickup to practice turning the tiny pots. Of course, they are now, both not working!

It's possible I may have connected the FPC cable incorrectly, but want to get back to the original settings to retrace my steps and correct everything along the way. Hopefully I haven't blown the diodes on the new one, but have ordered a replacement anyway. (this time from an US supplier claiming it's genuine Sony)

As the new laser is a few days away from delivery, I was hoping to try and get the unit going and perhaps salvage the purchased unit, if it's not defective and just needed a slight adjustment.

Few questions.

1. Anyone know a good starting point to adjust the pots to before installing? 900 ohms each? Going to try again, hoping I made a silly mistake, but want to get back to a good starting point, and unfortunately didn't do andy before adjustments.

2. Ribbon cable orientation. Assuming pins up install on both the Laser head and the PC board? (I can test this with a multimeter, but wanted to know if there's a standard way, as I've not worked with FPCs much)

Any and all responses appreciated!

PS, I do have an oscilliscope and a good benchtop multimeter, if any of that might help to troubleshoot, make alignments.

PS.. the service manual is readily available here https://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/dv-sp1000_manual_e.pdf, but doesn't seem to have much information or any calibration/alignment processes.

I've also checked the service manuals for the Integra RDV 1.1 and Integra DPS 10.5, which are largely the same unit.

Hi. Maybe CD laser needs a tiny power adjustment, this kind of tin potentiometers in CD lasers uses to have a little drift. It is not strange that needs a little adjust, but, prest attention to this: CD laser potentiometer is very no lineal, so when the laser start to light, very little variations in the potentiometer carry up high variations in power out in cd laser, so, laser power meter is almost mandatory.
Other thing, I've bought lasers pickup as new in Aliexpress and when it arrived, I found that are used and broken.

Thanks Manolo Mos.

I did get the CD to read the table of contents and on occasion play, but it is very erratic and makes a buzzing noise when spinning, as if the motor is rattling. Sometimes the seconds counter showed, sometimes not. Could not get DVD going though.

I'm not sure what the 2 pots are, as I've not been able to find a data sheet on the KHM-280AAA. The left pot seemed to adjust for allowing a CD to spin and read when adjusted in a very specific place.

The 2nd pot is very loose and doesn't seem to have 'stops' so wondering if I might have damaged that one.

Your are not kidding about the drift, on these pots! Half thinking about trying to replace them, but since I have a new optical pickup on the way, wasn't sure I wanted to go through that effort yet.

At this point, I think that me messing with the pots after it didn't initially work was the 'death kiss' lol, so going to await the new optical pickup mechanism and hoping for the best, or at least a good starting point. This pickup was ordered from a US supplier and also claims to be genuine sony. Hopefully it works!

If you want to modify the potentiometers but are afraid to do anything wrong, measure the ohm values of the potentiometers before play with it. If you don't get anything doing this tests, you can get back to place original potentiometers values.
I've seen pictures of your CD/DVD and it looks wonderful.

Thanks again ManoloMos.

Yes indeed, lesson learned on measuring the ohm values on the pots. I neglected to take measurements and will do so when the new optical pickup arrives on Monday evening. I'll use those measurements to dial in this pickup and perhaps I will have a spare and even see if the original can be an emergency spare.

Hoping the one arriving on Monday is plug and play!

Indeed the 27lb player is very good at playback of SACD, DVDA and CD. Very smooth with not so common wolfson WM8719 chips that may have been unique to Integra/Onkyo and was a collaboration between them BAT (balanced audio technologies) and Apogee (time clocks). I prefer it to my 3 year old DAC.

the guts of the machine... not my pic. Have to remove 2 circuit boards and a lot of parts to get to the optical pickup, but they did leave a hole under the bottom cover to allow access to the optical pickup trimpots.

Received the the item from the US supplier and it's exactly like the original and works!

Happily going through my SACD, DVA-A, CD collection now and a/b in with my luxman multibit.

Some pics of the process for anyone in the future, since this is a DIY site, after all.

1. Remove top 7 torx screws (T20) and top cover.

2. Remove 6 copper clad screws (red circles) and 4 connectors (red triangles) from Dac audio Board (black) and lift and tilt it off to the side towards the left.

3. Remove 4 screws (red circles) from maind DVD board (green) and tilt it towards the back. Also remove the 6 connectors (red rectangle) and make sure to somehow mark where they go!

4. Remove the bracket on the left side (yellow rectangle) by removing 2 screws (green circles) - see below

Boards tilted out of the way to allow better access to bracket and transport.

5. Disconnect the wires (red rectangles) to the optical pickup from the DVD main board (green)

6. Remove Transport from unit with 4 screws at base (shown removed, 4 triangles)

7. Remove Transport cover

8. Flip transport over and turn belted gear (as shown in transport step 6) to slide open disc tray and reveal 2 screws securing optical pickup.

9. Pickup can now be removed and the 2 cables disconnected.

10. These parts are transferred to the new optical pickup: I also opted to do the desoldering of the static protection blobs at this time.

Install is the reverse!

One important tip. When re-installing the transport into the unit, hold the cd tray door up, so it doesn't jam shut and not open on reassembly.

Also pay attention to the orientation of the flat cable that connects the optical pickup to the DVD main board and also the grey and blue cushions. Install them upside down and your disc will just grind. (ask me how I know, lol)

Finally, make sure the cables that go along the front of the DVD main board don't get pulled out when re-locating the ferrite lugs.

and PS... don't forget to desolder those static protection blobs!

just for fun, a CD to show the size of the large toroidal transformer
