small speakers or mini monitors are said to have better soundstaging then bigger speakers, is that due to the small baffle size or is it due to the small driver used ?
in my tests, by keeping the baffle size constant and changing driver size (midwoofer) suggests that driver size is the key and not the baffle size
what is your experience?

I can see you were in that thread 😀because i could not find one to my liking![]()
I find no problem with soundstage on a larger baffle. If it doesn't diffract in a problematic way, how do we hear that it's there?
ok, here is my problem, i replaced a 7" midwoofer with a tiny midwoofer in a quite large floorstander and there where a vast improvement in soundstaging.
but if i make the enclosure or baffle even larger i can improve the frequency response by minimizing diffraction effects, but would that also make the soundstaging go away? i do not want that, i would like to improve the soundstaging even further if possible!
i do not like the woodworking part of this hobby so i want to minimize my time building new boxes if possible
i have since i started this hobby read that small enclosures has better image and soundstaging, some even said that small speakers imaged best and had best vocal reproduction because they resambles the size of a human head!? but now i have started to believe that it has less to do with the box size but more to the smaller driver size

Have you heard speakers that did image well and have a hypothesis?
Have you heard of summing localisation?

Get some cardboard. Cut it up to the desired widths. Tape it to the speaker and listen. Now you'll know how a wider baffle affects imaging.
Many years ago I was at a Hi-Fi store.
The salesman shows me a room with large speakers, medium speakers, they sold Meadowlark, Oskar Aulos, etc. The music is playing. Looks impressive.
He says," What do you think? It sounds nice doesn't it!"
I said," It sounds Really Nice!" Soundstage, Bass, etc . Listening while we're looking at the Nice Expensive speakers.
He laughs and points to the top corners of the showroom, he placed some tiny satellite speakers (they were dark and the corners were dark-I didn't notice them) and had them hooked up to a powered subwoofer.
These were playing. Soundstage, Bass, Imaging, Impressive.
1st impressions I thought the large speakers were playing.
In this case the mini monitors soundstage better than the big speakers, because the big ones weren't playing.

A friend visited a few weeks ago and complained that voices on my speakers were too widespread. The formants (100Hz to 800 Hz), are coming from a 5" unit, and I'm sure that this is responsible for what he referred to.
I don't know about imaging, but I find small speakers tend to be more detailed. Could it be that the better detail it has, the better it images as well?

the best imaging I heard was Alpair 10.3 in the Pencil. A medium-small driver and narrowish baffles. what this happens to have in common with the experience of Chris ABC is possibly they were both single driver no crossover
In my post,"In this case the mini monitors soundstage better than the big speakers, because the big ones weren't playing."
I put that in as a joke. But seriously the salesman (part owner) had the mini speakers dialled in, the others were not setup properly (on purpose).
He got a kick out of surprising people.
I think any good speaker narrow or wide can sound nice, if setup properly.

is it possible to ad a new smaller baffle onto an existing speaker with a larger baffle, would that work like a small baffle speaker?

Probably less masking because of restricted bandwidth.
