Behringer UC operation

I've had my UC for quite some time and have found that good operation isn't easy. What I've learnt yet may be of use for others:

Behringer Ultracurve 8024

* Use the digital input
The analogue input is first converted to digital to be able to do something with the signal. So to avoid an additional DA-AD use an S/PDIF signal from your computer or cd-player.

I haven't tried the digital output yet, but I will soon.

Also: most soundcards upsample to 48 khz. You'd preferably like to avoid that.

This Terratec card directly throughputs the pcm signal (even no volume control is possibly from your computer), and is probably (one of) the best solutions for use with a computer and an external DAC.

* Measuring
To get insight into the actual response (and not just 31-bands) I also started measuring with my computer. This gave me quite different results, which I am more happy with than the auto-Q.
Be aware that soundcard inputs (mic / line) are not flat (at all). To work around this is to measure input-output from your soundcard and turn this results into a calibration.

I use:
- DSSF3 software (PCAE3.exe / http://www2.simtel.net/pub/pd/59217.html)
- Knowles FG-series mic element with 1,5 V battery supply (http://home.student.utwente.nl/d.r.yntema/knowles_FG_series.pdf)
- A Soundblaster PCI128 soundcard with this calibration:
Frequency : Level
20: 3
30: 1
40: 0
100: -5
400: -10
1000: -15
4000: -20
18000: -26

* Target curves
Read this and read it well:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thund...cuits/Ultracurve/Behringer target curves.html

I myself use this target curve after I have flattened the response:
Bands : volume
20 - 125: 2,5
160: 2
200: 1,5
250: 1
315 - 500: 0
630: 1
800: 1
1000: 0,5
1250: 0,5
1600: -1,0
2000: 2,5
2500: -4,5
3150: -4
4000: -3,5
5000: -3
6300: -2,5
8000: -2,5
10k: -3,5
12,5k: -4,5
16k: -5,5
20k: -7,5

Bass respons is somewhat a voodoo business. I've had the most succes by adjusting sub-125 hz by ear.

* Midi connection
I've tried to setup the midi connection with my computer, but have had no succes (software would crash or wouldn't 'see' the Behringer)

# Any comments / suggestions?
