I'm a performance artist who wants to combine audio output with my costumes.
Is it possible to achieve a large sound output from a portable source?
Can I power a decent system from a battery that isn't the size and weight of an anvil?
Can I install car speakers and power them from a battery
Has anyone ever dabbled in this field before?
If yes what problems did they encounter?
Can anyone suggest some useful products for me? eg battery powered amps/speakers/drivers
My budget is large- I will borrow any amount necessary to make this work!
I am very grateful for any advice or information anyone can supply,
So I would like to thank you all in advance 🙂

1. You want full range class-d amps. Sonic Impact have some very small ones that once you remove them from the case they become even smaller.
2. I wouldn't waste my time with car drivers. Look for drivers with neo magnets (lighter weight for same performance).
3. Lithium ion batteries is where I'd be looking. You can get fairly slim battery packs that you could sew into the suit at various points to keep their weight distribution even (and your comfort up).
When you say large sound output, how large? what frequencies/type of sound? If you want bass that means you'll need the speakers to be enclosed which will add a lot of weight. How do you intend to mount the drivers? Do they need to be hidden?

The only thing hard to do in this field with modern technology is low frequency output. Everything else can be made extremely compact and efficienct. There have been attempts at a "sound suit" or jackets before but they are so rare it will probably be hard to dig up a lot of info on design that has already been done. Pick an acceptable low end cutoff frequency and good luck!
Tweeters and midrange is easy, <50Hz gets hard to produce decent output. If you were making a robot costume you could just hide some long-throw woofer in your chest-plate, however, if you want a ninja suit, then things begin to get difficult, even for loud 100Hz output.
For most of the audio frequency spectrum, you can get some high efficiency (this is very important) tweeters and midranges for loudness, combined with Li-ion batterie(s) (you could use a laptop battery or two).
Please post back with pics when you make some progress 🙂 .
