audio file converter

is there free, downloadable software that can convert file types? I am ripping a song to use in a video, but need to edit it to a specific passage. The audio editing software I use won't read a CD. Ideas? Thanks!

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) is a free ripping tool. It should be able to rip to wave and other formats. There are many others.

Check out Audacity. No bloatware, it's free, and will even let you cut and paste different parts of the track together. A lot like video editing.

Audacity is a source for EAC? Same source as Audacity, maybe?

You can use EAC to rip the files from a CD, then use Audacity to edit them. Audacity is open source.

On the page that is a source for Audacity, I clicked on what I thought would get me to the page for Exact Audio Copy. It took me to a page for software called Express Ripper. Does ANYbody in here have a good source page for this software called Exact Audio Copy?

I use total recorder for audio and video editing. Bought it years ago and still get free upgrades. Program maintains a small footprint on your monitor, on line help is complete and they respond to email if you still have questions. Trial copies available.

Best to download the free trial version. As I recall the trial version is fully functional but it places a noise every five seconds in any file it saves.

My favourite audio file converter is XrecodeII.

Convert flac to mp3, flac to wav, ape to mp3, cue to mp3, flac to alac, flac to m4a, flv to mp3 and more.

Xmedia recode is good, and free. Audacity will import a song and export it in a number of different formats but something like X media recode will batch process a whole,load of files in one go. It will also strip the audio out of video files, handy for a certain video sharing site.
That same site will also have tutorials on X media recode.
I would download from videohelp.com that's a trusted site. Look in the tools section
