ASCILAB F6B review

It's got a straightforward, easy-to-understand design with nothing shady about it, and it's cheap since it doesn't go through a dealer. Too similar to Amphion?

I just can't bring myself to order it from the U.S. because I have no idea how much the tariff would be.

...might be interesting, relatively new brand from Republic of Korea

https://ascilab.cafe24.com/shop2/company/about.html

Amirm says best buy for the price of 835$ / pair..

This is all the rage at ASR, as it measures well and is priced reasonably.

But I wouldn't expect it to get much attention here on a DIY forum. I had assumed it used the "Fiber Cone" SB17NRX woofer, but your link above refers to a "reinforced plastic chassis" which means the SB16PFCR ($36) and SB26ADC ($54). (I think these SBA drivers may even be more of a bargain in Europe than in the US.) So a DIYer can spend $180 on drivers, 3D print a Somasonus/AugerPro waveguide and spend another $150 on the crossover and finish and you are at about 30-40% of the commercial price. (Of course a builder may need some talented person to design the xo as I am not aware of a current design with this driver combination.)

The current tariff rate for South Korea is 10%. The "reciprocal" rate of 25% is currently paused and scheduled to go into effect July 9th (unless TACO). I believe the 25% is in ADDITION to the base 10% rate.

I have problems to understand the logic behind the post - if you are not interested why your post?

P.S.: i have explicitly asked the forum moderation before posting if there is a place here to post such things and they told me to take the Vendors Bazaar category

calculation of https://www.diyaudio.com/community/members/a4eaudio.399782/ is uncomplete for the estimation of the cost of building a clone of this in DIY

the cost for the enclosure with the painting is missing at all, this model have a passive membrane on the rear front as the model with the extended bass response / the closed box model is about 725 bucks / pair for the people with home cinema and subwoofer

i know the calculation of german DIY magazines, they make the calculation only for the raw enclosure and never for an enclosure with industrial grade finish

too difficult to estimate without a range that makes the estimation needless

Stefano,

On diyAudio forum members can post if it interests them, and can also post if they do not find it interesting/appealing and if they want to share the reasons behind their thoughts/opinions - there is nothing wrong with that. 🙂

Forum member A4eaudio shares some of his observations as to why this might not be of great interest to diyAudio forum members.

Also please note that there are quite a few designs already shared on diyAudio that have very good measured response as per CEA2034 (if not as good as the AsciLab F6B), and they cost similar/less to build than than the AsciLab offering. But yes, much more work required... collect the parts, build the cabinets, build the crossovers, try to finish the cabinets so that they look good, etc. etc. - after all it is "DIY Audio" 😀.

And my congratulations to AsciLab to come out with a design with excellent measured performance (within SPL and LF output goals of the design), compact dimensions, good quality fit and finish (from the pictures it looks well constructed) at an aggressive price point.

Are you planning to get a pair for yourself?

Hello @zman01 ,

i understand your point about the post of member A4eaudio, my apologies if my reply sound offensive to him or anyone else

i abandoned for many years the DIY scene because i am a terrible carpenter, i have seen builds here in the 3 way and full range gallery with amazing build quality, but look at the pictures of the hobby garage of the members posting with ten thousands of dollars of tooling equipment

i came back in the mean time more than a decade ago with the open baffle trend, easier to build and accessible also without a garage with a tool equipment where i do not have the money for and even less the skills to use it right

best regards, Stefano

P.S.: before i came back for the open baffle stuff i was listening for a very long time with a pair of Monitor Audio Monitor One and a DIY subwoofer recycled from old cabinets of a friend - the drive unit in bad conditions is still in the cupboard, JBL D208 Alnico 8 inch, for home cinema i ended up with KEF Q series before i came across the Setelec.fr site where for a while you could buy the KEF drive units as spare parts

Stefano,

I also feel your pain with the "carpentry" part of a project; we in Asia usually have lower labor charges vs Europe, and that makes it possible to get the pieces cut by someone else if needed. However, the parts can be very difficult to find, and if shipped from Europe and USA, the shipping charges and customs duties can be quite high. Making recessed cutouts for the drivers is also not easy, as a router is required - and there is lots of wood dust... So no easy way... 🙂

Glad that you are finding open baffle a valid way to still explore DIY projects.

Hi @SBA_SLOB_GUY

I may have misunderstood your first post, as the thread title says "review" and links to the Ascilab webpage and ASR review. I assumed you were asking for feedback and people's opinions. You did post in Vendor's Bazaar, so I'll just add one thing that may be useful for those interested in buying...

The speaker originally was direct order from South Korea, with one exception....Purite Audio in the UK. It will soon be carried by Audiophonics for the EU market. Unfortunately for those of us in the US there is not a distributor yet and the current tariff uncertainty makes buying almost anything overseas directly quite a challenge. Hopefully someone steps up and starts carrying them in the US.
