Can anyone help run me through the process of changing the transport in an old Arcam CD player ?

Oats,
Find out which drive the player you have uses for example Philips CDM4 and then do a search on this site for that drive.
It should be almost the same regardless of the brand of cd player.
Also see if you can get a service manual from Arcam.
good luck

Hi. The transport is Philips CDM4/19. The service manual does not appear to be available. A manual for Arcam Alpha CD player is available and I have it. The manual for Arcam Alpha Plus does not appear to be available, even from Arcam.
The Alpha and Alpha Plus use the same laser so the schematic should be very close if not identical.
Marantz cd players like the cd40, cd41 use the same laser so you could search for laser problems or changing lasers in these players for information.
From memory read problems are usually caused by a faulty capacitor in the focus circuitry 47uF I think.
Have a search online and see what you find.
