Anyone tried this...

Hi there - this is my second unit that I did build (the card is very small= about 5x7 cm) - and this last one was for my friend. A superb NOS R2R-dac that has very nice layout, and very fine workings from the guy in China that made it. And I have tried several op-amps on the buffer. The I/V op-amp is more difficult to change - but the LPF-buffer is easy. And the price is not BIG = small. And it competes and is even better than my SC4398dac with Sowther trafos - at least on CD`s or 16/44.1.🙂

Of course - of course

Hi again...

I did wonder if anyone was ever to ask... AND it is a dual 1865R with very clean layout!!

The sound is easy on the ear - but still very distinct and revealing - and even as revealing as my other 24/192 dac.

But one thing is a drawback: it is only 18 bit! With one input! But most of the music I listen to is in 16/44.1. CD`s with RedBook!😎

And I think the seller deserves some more customers for this nice dac:

Filter....

It isn't a NOS dac Olav, I see the NPC filter on the board

Hi Jaffrie.

What is the lettering on the NPC filter you are reffering to? There is no upsampling going on. I have tried some high-res files(24/96 and 24/192) and the dac is giving very bad sound and stuttering.
So I can`t understand it is not a NOS dac??
I thought it was just a balanced - to - single ended filter before it went to the I/V op-amp(and then to the buffer)
I don`t have the schematic with me here - I`m offshore on a plattform for 14 days! But can check later in may(20/5)!!

And to Ketil - I`ll answer you more later about this very nice sounding dac - will send more in a couple days). I mostly use this now. Easier on the ear and with the new op-amp it is very musical.

Olav, that kit is using oversampling. The IC in the back right hand corner, an NPC SM5843A, is an 8x oversampling digital filter. The SM5843A is only rated for a maximum input sample frequency of 48kHz, which is why it's not playing your high sample rate files. 24bit files shouldn't matter, as the CS8414 will be configured to dicsard some of the bits.

The SM5843A looks to be intended mainly for CD players, there's better digital filters for a modern DAC. The AD1865s are good though.

OlavHaal,

Are you sure than this chineese shop with all the dac chips selled on it are genuine ones ?

AD812 + this old particular oap is maybe very interesting (surmise maybe this one to be a little responsible of the warm & non fatiguing sound, with the filter chip also)... But the PS of the DAC seems very poor...bad AC filtering e.g. from what we can see of the photograph.

CS8014 spidf is with crystal outside (hardware mode) ?

Hi all...

To your enqueries - I can say:

I don`t know if they are fake - all I know is the sound is good and distinct(on the warm side)! I have tried several Op-Amps and settled with one I like. The PSU is fairly simple - but the layout is very short and clean. No long traces for the signal.

Maybe they are inferior to more modern chips - but my my homemade SIT-amp and Alpair12P is giving very detailed sound both from my old Crystal DAC with Sowthers AND this small AD1865 DAC.

Perfect for me - and that is enough for me - before I jump on a pre-amp build!🙂
