Hi
Has anyone built the Seas Thor TL ?
Can anyone comment on how good they sound , given the expense of the drivers (around AUS$2000)..........
Thanks
Andrew

This kit is very good. You have to play music that is recorded properly otherwise you're going to hate it. I build it last Winter.

Just a stupid question..hehe..
I'v got some spare money..and I might be thinking about building my own speakers. (looks like a nice experience)
The main reason is the fact that my B&W206.5..don't have a low enough mid range..I dunno..it feels as if there is a gap in between my sub and my speakers..
Now I just checked up on those Thors..and I see they sell the speakers for 742euro's
Am I supposed to search for all the part for the corssover myself?
And the wood? (smaller problem)
I just don't have the faintest clue as to how much this joke is going to cost me..hehe
So..it comes down to this..how much did you pay for the crossover parts and the wood? (and where are you from, cause these things are cheaper in certain parts of the world)
I live in Belgium..

Can I ask this question ?
Do TL's like the THOR need to be set out from a wall like a rear
ported bass reflex enclosure ? .....especially since the THOR has
its "port" on the rear...........
Thanks

Brian, how did you manage to veneer your loudspeakers, with all edges rounded?

Hi Andrew,
My thought is you would want to have the speakers out from the wall an amount, but you'd also probably want to know how much baffle-step correction that the system was designed with, in order to know how much to space them out. Further, I don't recall if the speaker was designed with the output of the port in mind, in its relation to the amplitude of what the driver is doing, to ensure that it doesn't over-power what comes from the driver. The port being at the rear, being supported by the rear wall (or not depending on how far the system is from the wall), has some bearing on this, plus the amount of stuffing that you use. It depends on how much you care about this, really.
So, you'd want to space it out from the wall an amount, say 6 to 12" just for the sake of letting the line breathe, but I think the issue goes deeper than this.
One thought that Planet10 had on this design is to increase the amount of taper, to tune to the line to a lower frequency. I completely agree with this, however, I would probably re-design the line to have the terminus at the floor, but that's just my re-thought.
You may want to get the article that Joe d'Appolito wrote in AudioXpress May 2002.
Hope this helps,
Brendon

No veneer on the speakers. I used oak plywood on the sides and solid oak on the front, rear and back.

OK, do you didn't have problems with veneering
Do you have an idea about how I could veneer a cabinet that has all the four edges rounded?
PS: I plan to build a pair of peerless pipes, I know you also built a pair. What amp are you using with them? Since they're only 84dB/W/m , I don't know if my gainclone will be enough 🙁

As far as veneering goes, I have never done it.
The peerless pipes are still just a pile of wood sitting in the corner, and a box of drivers and crossover components. I am going to start assembling soon, as I am finally finishing up other projects.

On a side note, you motivated me to start building to peerless pipes tonight. Thanks!
I will post my progress here:

If you are interested...
biscuits, wood glue and lots of clamps make me happy 😀
