I still have my good old DTC-57ES waiting for major refurbishment. The drive has mechanical problems which are well-known for that Sony series.

What exactly are these "well known" issues? From what I've seen, All the Sony home DAT's are pretty much the same. Are there model specific issues?

Sony DAT 3 motor machines
I have done some videos on repairing the 3 motor machines. These are the most troublesome but once you know what to do with them they are quite easy to repair. As someone here has said, most of the Sony DATs use the same transport, with minor modifications but the dearer models use a 4 motor version with direct drive reels which is better - although even these can need a tweak of the pot that drives the take up spool.
Anyway, if you have a 3 motor deck ie the DTC-57ES, 750, 59ES, 60ES, ZE700, P7, 690, 670, 790, A6 or PCM-R300 take a look here:
