So I'm building these monitors... bookshelves...
3/4" Ply 10.5 litre box. Bracing shown.
Will be silver flute 5.5" woofer with Vifa XT25 ring radiators. 1st order butterworth...
So the photos... I hope they show up in the order uploaded are:
2 Isographic renderings from sketchup, pretty self-explanatory there.
Then two shots of the open half-made cabinets, I did follow through with the extra piece of bracing visible in the diagrams.
Then they're built yay! Easy part done.
Then I had to sand the buggers...
Then I skimmed them with 20 where needed to fill gabs and imperfections in the ply.
And now they're veneered. Gorgeous, that's beech.
Fine finishing in the coming days, then cutting and fitting the drivers/backplate/port, and then the fun of the x.o.

out of interest, why XT25 over the XT19?
Availability, I noticed someone selling it on the swap meet thread some time ago and bought it, not knowing what I'd use it for. The notion hit me to build bookers the other day and I decided to use what I had in the stable. For tweeters at least. The woofers were on sale at madisound for some outrageously good price and they showed well in isd so they made the cut.
Those look like sketchup renderings to me?
They are indeed.
Here's two more pictures. Port tubes are in. Yes they are aluminum. What can I say, I abhor plastic, it's the devil's plaything.
I'm diggin that!
So I cut the holes, assembled the prototype xo and put these into test mode. Here are some pics, as soon as the weather dries out I'm going to finish the cabinets properly.
Input regarding the xo is greatly encouraged. I enjoy Butterworths because they're cheap, they saddle the signal with the least possible obstructions and they've always sounded good to me.
I'm really wondering what to do for a bsc because I don't really know how to calculate what's needed there.

nice.
Another option is to have the tweeter in a separate enclosure above the woofer box.
That way you can move the tweeter back a bit for "time alignment" (if needed).

So here they are. Closer to finished now. I need to listen to x.o. a while. Tinker with that, and haven't addressed batting at all yet. Just running them empty for now. Bass is quite strong... Need time to think about the sound. On the plus side they seem fairly sensitive. Hopefully someone will bring measuring equipment to our Barrie meet in June.
I stained them Pickled Oak, as always I second guessed myself like crazy once it was done. But after the poly coats I felt justified, the pinkness went away. My veneering technique still needs honing, I think I applied too much contact cement, didn't let it dry enough in places. The veneer waves up with the grain here and there, only noticeable if you look for it. But I look for it ._.
