Hi guys and gals,
I am new here, but DIY is my bag baby! I have built a few bits and bobs in the past, including a 15" folded W horn that cracked the ceiling in my student house 😛
My electronics knowlege is not bad, but mostly automotive based, I have a car with a self built, open source injection system called megasquirt.
As for DIY amplifiers and source control, my experience is limited to internet research so far! I love HiFi audio and watching films, so to combine the two brings me great pleasure, currently we have a 50" Samsung plasma, kenwood AV reciever, eltax centre rear surrounds and sub, and mission floor standing fronts.
Now the kenwood is sounding a little worse for wear, it is about 6 years old and has gained a constant background hum and the rear channels are getting crackly.
My proposed project is as follows -
Speakers -
Fronts will be made by my father and I, they will consist of a pair of tops that contain 6" woven glass coned mid range drivers and soft dome tweeters. A combined rating of 120wrms per channel at 6 ohms.
The bass will be provided by a pair of folded horns containing 10" MB quart reference drivers. These drivers contain two 200Wrms voice coils of two ohms each, I propose to wire these in series to create a single 4 ohm 400w coil.
Quick sketch of the boxes -
The drivers -
The centre will be possibly an 8ohm Dali Ikon rated at 100Wrms.
Rears will stay and are rated at 8ohms and 60Wrms.
Now, my ideas for driving the speakers are a little vague, however I do have a few hard and fast rules, I would like amplifiers to be seperate from the source control, I do not want the decoder and all the delicate low level signal control to be right next to a 500va toroidal transformer! 😛
I think one of these will do the trick for My 5.1 decoding -
For the other amplifiers I would like to use some of the following -
For the front tops, a TA2024 90Wrms Per channel -
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
The centre vertically bi-amped and rears on a four channel LM4780 gainclone -
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
and I am unsure of what to do with the bass drivers, I think a twin mono setup, so two seperate amps running around 200Wrms each, may one of these -
dual mono HIEND power AMP ,2*200W 8ohm finished on eBay (end time 07-Nov-10 16:08:56 GMT)
or
ChinaDIYNO.10 power amp,120W*2 assembled&tested on eBay (end time 07-Nov-10 14:45:12 GMT)
So what do you guys think? Will the amps be suitable? What direction should I take with the bass amps?
Any advice will be of great help guys.
Thanks in advance,
J

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
