Amp camp kit. What to expect?

Dear Friends,
currently I'm using an old kit from Velleman as power amp. K4020.

A lot of power with the IRFP's and two toriods as transformers. But I'm looking for a new project.
I builded the DCB1 buffer with the Salas power supply allready and I'm so pleased with it that I was thinking about building the Amp Camp kit.

But will it improvel the overall sound or will it just give me my soldering hobbie...Will it give enough 'punch' to the speakers. Problem is that I can't listen to it befor I build it. I'm sure I'm not the only one strugled with this question.
I'm driving B&W CDM7.
Or should I go to something like the F5 turbo?

thank you very much.

The speaker looks to be 90dB efficient and 8 ohm nominal but 4 ohm minimum. While the ACA could work it would probably play more nice with a more efficient speaker and one that doesn't drop down as much in impedance. If you want to you could mod it to play more nice into 4 ohms by changing the proportions of R1-R4 and taking output closer to the drain of Q2.

In the end, however, it depends on how loud you want to play. The ACA does not play 10W (100dB on your speakers) as cleanly as the normal Firstwatt amps, and with your speakers I think one of them would be a better match. Say F3, F4, F5, F6 or the M2 can easily handle your speakers. If you do not need to handle 100dB peaks then you could of course get away with less power.

The F5 turbo would work too but probably be a lot of overkill... there are, however, people who like that =)

While I've neve built an F5 Turbo... I'd imagine there is a wide margin between it and ACA. Guess it comes down to whether you want to get stuck on a single ended topology or go with the higher potential of P/P. I think either (ACA with a real pwer supply, not laptop brick) or F5, M2, et al will give you plenty of volume. Obtain an good chassis with adequate heatsinks and experiment with whichever seems like your flavor. A quick glance of Velleman K4020 indicates a dual rail supply, perhaps you can re-purpose those transformers for a dual rail first watt design like aleph , F5, etc.. any of which will probably satisfy.
