For the first time in about 3 months, I fired up my Zen and BOZ system again. And man! It sounded good!
I started to think about getting the final parts for putting my next amp together and realized- why should I?
There is nothing wrong with this amp setup. There is more to be done w/ the rest of the system! The Zen is probably the strongest part of it.
I could ignore the Zen amp and preamp altogether and concentrate on about a hundred aspects of my system that need work.
Should an audiophile try to get the most out of his system for a given quality range of products? I mean milk it to the point of diminishing returns?? Then, find another unit in the system chain to center around as the reference and start all over?
Just because The Son of Zen was born, does it make the Father Zen obsolete?
Everybody has an approach to issues. What's yours?
I'd like to hear your rants, insults, and all around input on this thought.

the question here is how can you stay 3 mo without listening to your system? 🙂
In my opinion lots of it has to do with keeping busy, and the desire for a new challenge. You should know about challenges...I am referring to the TV projector thread!
As far as the Zen vs SOZ debate is concerned I just love the idea of balanced operation. I am actually waiting for Nelson to post the new 'Nephew of Zen'. I would expect it to adopt the SOZ differential design with current sources ala Aleph preceded by an outer voltage gain 'layer' that would resemble the balanced linestage. Hints of the advent this mini X-seres from Nelson have been numerous and I am very excited to see it and, if it has reasonably high power and lower power consumption than the SOZ, I will build it.
In anticipation of that I am putting together the balanced linestage and look forward to have a complete balanced system.
By the way...what speakers and sources are you using?

That's my problem. My source equipment and speakers are not even close to the caliber of the Zen series. What goes into them and what they put out to fall short in my opinion.
I've been looking at it wrong. I need to get the equipment around them up to par.
I have an older Marantz 53 CD player going through Audio Alchemy v1.0. to the BOZ to the Zen to a set of home-brew 6.5", 1" titanium tweeter, infinite baffle speakers.
I lost my Audio Quest video/digital cable. Now using generic RCA cable. Well, at least it's Mogami studio balanced wire, but I know for a fact the AQ cable sounded better. And, the A.A. v1.0, well they are out of buisness, but they made it to at least v3.0.
I'm not giving the Zen and BOZ a fair chance. There is much to do before I graduate to a better amp system.

Vince: Would you happen to have some further information on your open baffle speakers? I've been hearing more and more praise lately about open baffle designs...
Also, the Max Rochelin Memorial Cable makes a great digital interconnect. I've had success with it coming out of my Meridian transport, and it measures pretty darn close to a true 75 ohms. I also use a set of them as component video cables.
