[Negative Design]

I've created this thread so everyone can show or describe their Successful OHP mods, or UNsuccessful so a lesson can be learned from it.
i will be retrofitting my OHP with an HQI system REAL soon i estimate 2 weeks. some ppl have done it here are the ones i know of:

I still see some people creating threads asking questions about modding OHPs. Please post them here I've compiled many links and sources relating to OHP modding and im still looking.

Here Alchemist's thread, his project is pretty kool😎 i would like to get a ballast from where he bought his at.(19$!!)

Just some clarification the ballast with capacitor and ignitor was £32 thats about $45-50, not $19. Sorry to burst peoples bubble. The company I used is also very hard to get hold off even from England.

actually your not bursting any bubbles, 50$ is a great price.anything under 100$ is fine for me 🙂

50$ is cheap compared to the 125$ ballast DIYLABs is selling...im starting to really dislike those guys! 🙁

M80 ballast

I think that an electronic ballast is a little pricey for my liking as well. I think that this is the ballst that we are after.

It should be less than half the cost of that icecap that diylabs is selling,
but I havent found anyone selling them online, I havent really started looking that hard yet though.

No to bust in or anything But you guys are looking at the one 250 watt ballest and the HQI socket right? Since the ballest is bare how do we know the wiring skematic for it, do I asume it will come with instructions?

well we can only hope, and no your not bursting in, the more ideas we get the better we can learn 🙂 . i would be gratefull if you could email him and ask and post it here.

Negitive, that ballast on the link you have looks like a standard
M58 ballast, this is just a guess, but an M80 has a capacitor and an ignitor, I only see a capacitor listed for that one.

well dont know what to say about that one,but im pretty sure only electronic ballast have capacitors.Since that site has many HQI supplies,lights,sockets and so on i assume the ballast works for it.

i correct myself m80 ballast DO need capacitors.

The capacitors are not needed for correct operation. They only make sure your voltage and current drawn from your wall socket are in phase.
