3FE25 is obnoxious up close in a boombox - BSC or maybe a slot filter to help?

sounds think - peaky - 3fe25 are in ~37 cubic inch chambers - augmented by a summed channel 10" woofer (Kinter 2.1 amp) Preliminary listening a in a small/narrow room sounds harsh. I wonder if a slot filter - perhaps 1.5 to 2 inch wide (??) behind the 5" diameter grills might help with the balance - ? (3fe25 in a "Karlson 3.5" sounds pretty nice.

The 20v tool battery on the back balances out the little 3118 amp nicely.

I think I'm in the minority, but when I tried that driver my opinion was that is sounded kind of aggressive/raspy/sizzly when pushed and playing full range. As a midrange up to about 3kHz it seemed good though. I get listening fatigue quickly with any tendency toward stridency though, so I think I'm more sensitive to this kind of problem than the average listener.

I like it in the little "K 3.5" Karlson style box down to ~200Hz but its piercing / nasty as a direct radiator in my boombox - being at the upper corners of a small baffle doesn't help matters - I'll muck with a diffraction slot to hear if that helps. Interesting that it can make a decent midrange. I do remember liking the 4 inch neo Faital - but again in a slot filtered cabinet.

"K3.5" - also with 3FE25-4 - decent sounding to my old eears with support under 200Hz

That plot seems exaggerated given what I heard listening and what's in the manufacturer's spec sheet, but the trend seems similar for on-axis response.

If you have an old equalizer handy, you could also try dialing in some upper midrange and treble cut and see if that makes you happy.

Does turning the treble down a bit on the Kinter help?

And now that I'm looking again, I was actually dealing with the 3FE22, but the response differences look minimal between the two.

I figured out some of what's going on - the source was my kid's Ipod - EQ setting was "Classical" with bass and treble boost. Listening to the Kinter's tone control switch "In" vs "Direct" those controls are both rolloffs (no boost function) and at their max settings, are pretty much the "Direct" sound.

The 10 inch cap assisted nominal 8 ohm GRS 10PT woofer is not loud enough to keep up with 3FE25-4 without EQ and ideally some shelving. An 8 ohm version of 3FE25 would help a bit - or padding of the current 3FE25-4.

I ran some songs from the Ipod with the "Deep" EQ preset - not terrible - not ideal - a 7 or 10 band graphic could help - maybe something like a guitar pedal if can run from 9v and is two channel.

That Kinter 2.1 3118 amp at $39.95 including a 100 watt power supply is a good value even if it lacks Baxandall type tone controls.

I'll try the felt and 1 inch slot

(don't currenly have a media player -can't afford one unless income improves)
