16 Ohm 5-5.5 inch drivers for high efficiency MTM WAW / FAST?

I have a pair of Visaton FRS 5 X and among others a SET amplifier. I want to try a small MTM floorstander with dual 12 or 16 Ohm 5-5.5 inch drivers. Since the project will be based on a 10 euro mid tweeter, i like the 5 inch drivers to be affordable as well.

Any drivers i overlooked? I did a pretty thorough search i think, but you never know, any hidden gems still out there? I am in Europe, some shipping costs is not a problem.

Want to try one of the drivers of the MTM in a closed box and the other one in a transmissionline/ ported enclosure, to even out the impedance peaks a bit. Cabinet is approx 15 cm wide. PA or even installation speakers will do fine. I like it to be a very small but efficient floorstander. -3dB of 50Hz would do.

I am looking for x-max > 2mm, Fs < 100, Qts > 0.4, dB/W/m > 87 dB, Re > 8.00, rms < 1.0 Don't mind knowing higher priced alternatives! But do prefer a price below 45 euro a pc.

5-5.5 inch 12-16 Ohm drivers:
Peerless India M 130/16 Ohm 21,33 euro -3dB 40Hz rms 1.12
Peerless M13NH 12 Ohm 21,33 euro (P.india)
Tonsil GDN 15/40/4 15 Ohm 20,13 euro (Peerless India?)
Dayton PA130-16 Ohm 28,50 euro rms 0.70
Tonsil GDN 13/50/9 12 Ohm 30,32 euro rms 0.84
STX.5.1.160.8.F.A.FC.X 16 Ohm 38,93 euro rms 0.34

Hope to get new drivers on the list 🙂

Good day,

the Visaton has only 84dB*m/W half-space efficiency, say an eta of well 1/8%, in the squawks. Few 5 inch woofers have less efficiency than that, so if we use two (+3dB), provide for baffle step power EQ (-3dB) and give the small Visaton an advantage (+2dB), then the woofers will have to have 16 Ohms total, for instance 8+8 Ohms.

So i would rather use two 4 inch woofers, for example these 8 Ohms ones of Chinese origin, magnetically shielded, lo fundamental, datasheet available. Any bigger and stronger would cast a shadow over the Visaton.

[wink]

Thanks, that's a nice budget woofer! I know the FRS 5 X is a fullrange driver, i have seen the Klang & Ton Cheap Tricks with the different crossover points from 400 Hz to 10kHz. Efficiency of the FRS 5 X is highly dependent on the chosen x-over point.

Easy to implement is nice, but not the purpose of this endeavour 🙂. I realy want to try parallel 16 Ohm in MTM or should i say M (FR) M? I do appreciate you all trying to come up with a better implementation for the FRS 5 X. There's no need for speaker advice beyond the 16 Ohm 5- 5.5 inch, i also have a pair of Sica 8 H1CS-8's. Which would probably make a fine combination with the FRS 5 X. But then again, i want to try MTM with smaller drivers. I do not intend to build the best speakers ever, just want to have some fun with a concept that's new to me.
