tuba vs taphorn?

I can't believe no one jumped on this one.

Tuba goes higher, but looses efficiency down low ... Tapped Horn CAN go lower and louder, but is only good for 2 octaves max.
Home theater can use the 20-25 Hz loud signal of a really low TH, but then you gotta cross over at 80 Hz.
This question is so general, there is no right answer !!!

sooo... a th isnt that good for music. crossed over above 120hz?

As Alice said, "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where –" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

So, the question is "where do you want to get to."

well, im building some 2-way monitors with an AE td15m and some beyma cp385/ nd compression drivers... the monitors will be active and pretty efficient. i will tune them around 50-55hz. need a sub i can use with them to cover the low-end. i need the sub to play super fast double-kick drum for metal, and play low for ht. i would like this sub to be good for music and ht. is this possible with a th? here's some music i want to replicate well...

YouTube - MESHUGGAH - Bleed tune to 2:39

YouTube - Lamb Of God - Dead Seeds (Drums Only)

tune to 2:06.... also around 3:06 the drummer hits an 8O8... low bass note. i need the sub to cover that aswell.

looking @ ur info,i go for a th .
because you x-over @ 55,you can tune it @ 20 hz no problem, but it needs to be big!
mind that the heavy metal kick drum have also verry high notes that wil be played bij your compression driver!

Hi nephylum,

According to Elemental Designs specifications the A7-900 comes with a built-in 1300Wrms amplifier, and features two 18" long throw drivers in a 19.45ft^3 (external) cabinet, at a cost of $2,500.--. Which tapped horn are we comparing this too?

Elemental Designs also has the O-Series v.2 driver, model 19O.v2 18" driver available @ $245.-- ea. Maybe you could put this driver into Hornresp, and simulate a BR and a TH and see what you get?

Regards,

hmmm... that enclosure would be huge if i used the 19O.v2 sub. if i could make it tall, instead of wide like the danley spud... i would definitely do it

Hi nephylum,

I use Gadwin PrintScreen, they have a freeware version towards the bottom of that page:

Gadwin Systems, Inc. - Software for your business. DiagramStudio - program for create diagrams and flowcharts; GeForms - solution for design and filling forms, hundreds of free business forms.

As to the tapped horn simulations, you have to decide what you want, just like with other enclosures, there is a great deal of variety of what can be designed. As an expample here are two 500 liter tapped horns with the ED 19Ov2:

Hi bjorno,

Like always: nice work! I like your comments and hints.

As to the tapped horn: I prefer the 4 section over the 3 section simulation, it makes it a lot easier to level out the peaks and valleys in the passband, also, keeping the L12 dimension as short as possible has a tendency to clean up the impulse response

I don't think that you need much more equalization and filtering with a tapped horn than with any other vented enclosure. This is probably a gross simplification, but they all unload below the passband, and they all have audible artifacts above the passband that should be filtered out. In practice this doesn't seem to be a major problem at home volume levels (below house wrecking).

In the end the room is going to be the real problem.

Regards,
