That would be ideal, but it's outputting analog right now. I've been struggling to find a laptop drive than functions at all, and doesn't crash Huang's software.

From what others have said, most (or all) of the laptop drives have one big processing chip which includes everything, including a DAC, which means it might be impossible to divert a digital audio signal and use a better DAC.

When I get a chance, I'll open it up and run down the chip numbers, and see if I can figure out how it's put together. The best I might be able to do is bypass an op-amp and replace with transformers.

My main goal for this is portability, ao the quality level to beat are the toy-like diskman-type products, none of which even have a line out anymore.

I am using the similar Unit from DIYbiz, with an older china made cd rom drive - no name - but mechanically excellent quality.
I have not tried slimline drives, as I run digital out to a src 2496, and slimline models do not provide digital out.

Hi,
I got the enclosure from rp electronics, www.rpelectronics.com, in Canada. Best racken closures I've come across at an affordable price.
The engraving was done by frontpanel express.

http://www.rpelectronics.com/
click on catalog, enclosures and racks -at the left margin, then rack cases, left margin again.
Or go directly to the ten inch or 12 inch deep enclosure

Peter, may I ask you to give me the diagram of your panel please? I plan to make an enclosure like your one.

Plus, about the small buttons, were did you get the ones you mounted on the panel? And how much for the front panel?

Thanks a lot!

The buttons are just contactors, replacing the small buttons on the board that comes with the kit.
I got mine from:
http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=2750644

I removed all unneccessary parts - headphone output, volume control,
switches from the cd rom, removed the spindle weight with the bracket holding it from the cd rom housing - just cut it off nicely with tin snips - and after installing the stripped cd rom player into the rack case I measured carefully and cemented the bracket and weight on to the bottom of the top cover of the rack case.

As the stripped cd rom is still a bit higher then the case, you have to use shims - I went for aluminum strips - between the frame and the top cover or between both.
As for the panel layout - send me your email to member contact, and I will try to send you the file.
