I noticed the led's on XDD-XO Trident board aren't lighting up. Reg is working ok ,input 5.25V , output 3.4V. Is this normal?
Make sure you are not starved for current at VD.

Also double check that you have all of the regs in the right spot and well soldered.

Would it be possible to have sound at all if the regs are in wrong positions ?

Not as far as I know.

Never hurts to check it all though.

The funny thing is it seems to be working perfectly, and it is regulating- the output is a little high at 3.4V, but pretty close.
Anyway I ordered a replacement, nice that spares are available.

Question Russ/Brian; the U.FL connector for the master clock - I'm thinking about using Ian's FIFO for the I2S stream, with it driving the ESS synchronously. When playing DSD (these two will be switched via Otto), will Buffalo III-SE use it's clock as Master? Put another way - will Buffalo use the clock signal if provided, else fall back to its own clock?

No - you need to use one or the other. The simplest solution if you wish to use an external clock is to not install the supply for the clock (trident).

Default Grounding issues

What is recommended vis-a-via power supply output grounds vs. chassis ground? Should the analog ground float or have back-to-back diodes to chassis ground?

Largely up to you.

I usually float the analog ground and isolate it from the chassis.

if I use a metal chassis I always connect it to mains ground/earth.
