I'm jonesin' for this transport too.
Any word if the USB/I2S transport/Buffalo II combo will support 32 bit integer playback (no floating point conversion)? |

Simply no need for that kind of bandwidth here.

Sure, but I don't have a PHY to use for that yet.

It just came out today and to me it isn't clear what's available for it. I imagine it will be a while for the optical hardware is available. Sure looks promising though.

Russ, great project! If the I8S and ASIO work out it'll be really sweet---getting 1394 into a fanless PC to thunk through a couple Firewire audio interfaces to get enough SPDIF outs to run a triamp or quadamp is really kind of a hassle. (The xmon parts seem to be the next best thing to audio SHARCs but they lack the SRAM to support time reversed IIR. And VisualDSP++ for the SHARCs starts at USD 3.6k. So I'm kind of locked in to a PC crossover for the time being.)

And since Apple has jumped in to use it, perhaps it will go the same way as FireWire (great, but unadopted by the mainstream).

That depends on the roadmap and market acceptance, but somehow I doubt it. Intel has a history of making very cheap to use interface options (read: royalty free). It's the ease of use for manufacturers that made PCI, PCIe and USB as important as they are today.
