Let me rephrase: Will the buffalo 2 work well using only one 9V transformer + placid power supply + buffalo 2 kit wired together and directly connected to my naim amp?
![]() I'm not rlly a diy-junky, I just want something better than the DacMagic and I lack the money for anything serious. |

Hello, scanned this (huge!) thread and hopefully learned all I need to know about the Buffalo II - looks like a beautiful piece of work.
I'm considering using it in the following way: Squeezebox3 -spdif- Buffalo II -balanced- 2xUCD400 * Squeezebox would do digital volume control (already proven lossless until a certain volume) * For keeping costs low I would like to run the Buffalo II without Ivy-III (I'll accept the 12db worse thd+n) - is the direct output of the Buffalo OK to drive UCD modules? Their gain is 26db - recommended input impedance is 7 Kohm. Thanks |

I have mine connected directly to ucd 180 in balanced mode. Plenty loud. But I would recommend controlling the volume inside the DAC rather than before the DAC.

Russ,
Not sure if you are able to answer this due to NDA agreements with ESS, but does the Sabre chip's DSP manipuate clipped signals? One thing the Buffalo is amazing at is handling music that was almost unlistenable on other DAC's, that I had put down to the 'loudness wars' amd digital clipping. Regards Martin |

Thanks glt, for your feedback. I understand volume control is better @ the DAC than before it, but as a "low cost" test - to see if the DAC outperforms my Denon 4306 feeding the UCD's - this will do for now

Any listening impressions of Buffalo II VS. Buffalo II in Dual Mono ?
Does the latter setup justify it's (almost) double cost ? |
