Why such high plate voltage in 2A3 DRD?

Every schematic I have seen has the voltage at 500v or greater. Why? It seems like you should be able to use the good old 250v plate -50v grid like the spec sheet suggests. Am I missing something?

Yes.

Here's a hint: have a look at the 2A3 cathode resistor value in the DRD vs a typical design.
