Time to bring this thread back up....
I have finished the chassis (still less transformer cover), wired everything up properly, changed my wiring very slightly and added an appropriate voltage divider for the heaters. I also added two resistors of 200ohm before the rectifier tube as recommended in the old data sheets...
And hooray, the thing starts up very smoothly, no banging and clanging in the rectifier whatsoever, and more surprisingly, no hum!! This is only my second amp, and it is quiet!
With a source connected I only get some minor hiss and very little hum, but only at levels far beyond what my ears could take. So when something could be improved then the slight hissing...but that seems to come from the "front" since there is no hiss with no source connected.

Sure, here it is...

I don't claim to be the originator of the schematic, I found it on a german forum. I did change the psu by adding the tube rectifier and a different topology (CLCLC using film caps).
