I've used cat-5 before for longish cable runs..

Ground all the extra wires!..You might only use 2 pairs (left and right + and - ) and then have 2 pairs left over-ground them!
It will help kill some of the noise..
I've also put a ferrite cores (from old monitors,etc) at each end of the cable,to help keep RF/noise out aswell.

I once had a homebrew cat-5 cable that was about 35 feet long,and there was very little noise/hum with the two tricks mentioned above. ;)
