As far as I know, 5842 is just the standard 4-digit American number for a 417A, which is a Western Electric number. So, they are the same tube.

Or, you could argue it's not truly a 417A unless it was manufactured by WE, I guess.

In any case the characteristics should be the same, not just similar.
