Can anyone point me toward some decent but not too expensive preamp output transformers? Something like 10K:600 to plate load a 6sn7/6j5 or something similar. I have a pair of edcors, but am looking for something a bit higher in quality, but less expensive than the electra prints. Thoughts?

They are $85 or so each, but they are electrostatically shielded
and are fantastic for a PP 6SN7 driving 600 ohms out. In fact, they were made for this application. Everything else is $100 each, Sowter (when you factor in currency and shipping), Jensen, etc. I did also of work with the Edcors, both the 10K:600 and the 10K:150. They cant take much DC imbalance, so I abandoned PP triodes driving the Edcors and tried running them parafeed SE. That worked out much better for bass response. I also had to use a low Rp tube to get the bass I wanted, 5687s, not 6CG7s. Despite the limitations with Edcors as a line-out, they work fantastically as line-in and phase splitters. I've been driving 10K:10K with a solid-state differential line chip (Analog SSM2142). They sound fantasticc, with a solid state driver to boot.... ![]() -- Jim |
