look/search for SY's Heretical Linestage here, he used a fet and a relay for output delay. Frank's Ultimate used the simpliest of all - a mute switch.

I just put together a "passive pre" using a pair of circuit boards from which has a delay circuit built-in. You could use this as the front-end for an active preamp since it supplies volume control and source selection.

I don't remember the exact model number but it is the set that sells for $32 US. You can switch four sources control volume and mute via remote.

When you switch sources the system mutes and then turns the volume control all the way down. It then switches in the newly select source and raises the volume control slightly so it is audible. The delay is also there when powering up the circuit.

It uses LEDs (that you supply) to indicate which source is selected. When the delay from switching sources is active the LED blinks rapidly.

All in all a pretty nice set of boards for a great price.
