If the 6sn7 is famous for an application, it is as a driver. The 12au7 has similar rp, mu, current and dissipation to the 6sn7. It is not equal, only equivalent in application. Incidentally, it has somewhat of a cult following.

redzi, if you like a certain sound character, 'warmth', 'crispness', the 6sn7 may not be what you're after, as has been said, it is clean. I prefer it, but feel it is only fair to say this.

Don't expect these guys to admitting to running ECC88 preamps, I don't care, I'm not listening to my little valve's reputation.....
Dead quiet, very musical, very non microphonic too once you find the right setup.

I have just started the valve road, and this was my first step.

Are you saying that you like ECC88 in line preamps? Me too

The 12au7 is a more modern equivalent to the 6sn7. A somewhat richer sound, less microphonic. Some sound very good, some don't.

I read in another thread that the EH e88cc is especially non microphonic.
Actually, no. The 6CG7 is the modern equivalent of the 6SN7, not the 12AU7A, which is something different, and none too useful due to its nonlinearity (although it can make a nice SRPP/Mu Follower). So far, I've used 6J5s (single triode like one section of a 6SN7) and 6SN7s as common plate drivers. They work great.

The Sovtek 6SN7s I used weren't microphonic at all. Sharp raps didn't cause any disturbances when o'scoping the output.

I think many times people blame bad construction on microphonics.

When I build my little valve buffer the first time around the whole case was microphonic, sounded nice as long as it didn't get any bumps.

On rewireing, and layout, I found the same coponents and the very same valve, dead quiet, I think I'll have to throw the amp to hear microphonics now.
