You could also try Tube Cad, you will find a lot of information there, but it's not a newbie site.

I have a rather large fairly organized outline of DIY online tube electronics info all w/ live links. If you (or anyone else)would like a copy drop me an e-mail.
Cheers Craig Ryder

Some of those old console amps can be pretty decent once they are fixed up, and the EL84 is a nice tube for hi-fi. The output transformers are also a major factor in sound quality.
You could simply restore the existing circuit, or you could totally rebuild it with a new design... hehe I am a big fan of PP amps with a little negative feedback- they can have fantastic sound and much more liveliness than SE amps IMHO. One thing you should be careful of is the snake oil claims- you don't need silver wire or oil capacitors to get a very good sound. Its all about the circuit design, operating points and transformers. Oh, and also download TDSL (Tube datasheet locator) from duncanamps, its a small . exe database thingy that has a huge amount of information. Its very useful... Keep us posted, and we want pix!

Hi Craig,
Thx for the offer. If you like I can send you my AUDIO folder in my "Favorites" as well after I weed it out. The thing needs weeding soo bad I'm faster with a Google search then trying to find it under "Favorites". Oh well,I might push you e-mail button after all. Cheers,

Hi Shifty,

If you like the EL84 I recommend the E84L/7320 by Siemens or the Russian EL84M. Quote:
