Some of those old console amps can be pretty decent once they are fixed up, and the EL84 is a nice tube for hi-fi. The output transformers are also a major factor in sound quality.

You could simply restore the existing circuit, or you could totally rebuild it with a new design... hehe

I am a big fan of PP amps with a little negative feedback- they can have fantastic sound and much more liveliness than SE amps IMHO.

One thing you should be careful of is the snake oil claims- you don't need silver wire or oil capacitors to get a very good sound. Its all about the circuit design, operating points and transformers.

Oh, and also download TDSL (Tube datasheet locator) from duncanamps, its a small . exe database thingy that has a huge amount of information. Its very useful...

Those are the ones you got for free no?

If you like the EL84 I recommend the E84L/7320 by Siemens or the Russian EL84M.

Circuit first,PSU,regulation,then the fancy stuff I'd say.
