I've been looking at 4U 19" subracks as a way of making an amplifier look tidy on the outside if there's a lot of messy wiring, nuts and bolts etc. in the construction. RS Online sell a 4U chassis in the UK quite cheap and I'm tempted.

What are your views of completely enclosing a valve amp? Not very popular I imagine, but it would be tidy.

If you're thinking of putting all the tubes inside a rack case, I'd suggest looking for 5U or 6U instead unless you're making a preamp. The other option is to mount the tubes sticking out of the back of the chassis like these guys...

6U is huge, but 4U will probably require fan cooling.

I wouldn't think you'll need fan cooling. The top plate will be mesh. The bottom plate could be as well. Could make some ventilation holes in the back plate but I wouldn't think that's necessary. Just keep the output tubes and rectifier away from the side walls. Haven't tried yet, though. I have all the parts so I'll rig something up and try it out. Lots of nice rails and plates to screw together like Meccano. Love it!
