I recently got a Simpson 420 function generator that came without a probe or manual. Simpson does still have manuals for this but they want $25 (a fair price I think but way more than I paid for the unit).
The connection is a BNC plug and is labeled "600 Ohms". As a test I used one of my o'scope probes connected to the generator and connected the tip of that probe to my other o'scope probe connected of course to my scope. The waveforms are correct, sine looks like sine, triangle is a triangle and square is square. Frequency is also correct. Can I just use my scope probe or should I be looking for a "real" probe? Can I make probe for this (it would be nice to have one terminated in an RCA and one terminated in alligator clips)?

Hi Sherman,
Make a probe. Use 52 ohm coax and terminate as you need. You could even use plain leads where you need them. You may find another on Eeeek bay with probes and manual. Then you have spare parts. -Chris |

Thanks Chris, I figured since it was working with a scope prob I could probably make a lead/probe. I have some 52 ohm coax in the basement and a crimper but I think I'll have to pick up a couple of connectors. I'll make a couple with different ends. I'm always looking on that little auction site for stuff I need (want) and will definitely keep an eye out for another unit.
