I'm going up to Tokyo in a couple of weeks for a weeks business. Do any of you know if I can get James transformers up there? if so where?
I have heard that these transformers are in fact made by ex Tamura employees, and that they do come at a more reasonable price.
If any of you can help I would really appreciate it.

If you go to the Akihabara section, there's the
famous Toyko Radio Department store building.
On about the second floor there's a store that
sells Japanese iron. Tamura and others.
If you really want some interesting items.
Take the "subway" to Shinjuku stop and
walk north til you find Tokyu Hands. Seven
floors (with mid-floor sections) of everything
you could imagine. Take your wife - she'll
love you for the crafts...
The hifi section is near the top floor and has
about 6 or so preamp and amp tube kits.
There's even a tube CD kit. I recall a 300B kit
and there are even speaker kits. Also, a fair
range of Japanese phono cartridges.
The other Tokyu Hands are not as well stocked
as the Shinjuku one.
I felt Akihabara was over-rated. I saw old
american (Sprague) caps for $35 (US). While
I spent about 6 hours there, I did hear high-end
hifi - nice but I liked TH better.
Bring lots of cash. This stuff is very expensive.
Note: when you arrive, buy copies of the local
HIFI magazines. Look at the ads. If you find a
store that sells what you want, have the hotel
folks give you subway directions or if its nearby
take a cab (with the magazine of course).

Euphonia Audio in the US carries James transformers, so you shouldn't be paying more than their list price for them. Also, IIRC, these are Taiwanese transformers, not Japanese.

My experience: a shop called HINO audio in Akihabara advertises James transformers. However, they have very limited stock. I wanted to by some transformers there but the model I wanted was not available... Shop personnel seemed to have minimal knowledge of english.
Interesting shop, though. HINO audio actually has several small shops close by the tube shop, selling speakers etc. They are not directly in the main Akihabara, but a bit off the main action. You can find a coarse map on their web pages.
