hi, i want to know if the cathode follower is a gain stage.
If i have a 4 gain stage preamp + a cathode follower, do i have 5 gain stage ? |

There's no voltage gain, but there is sometimes power gain.

Yep. Whether or not you want to count it as a "stage" is up to you... or more importantly, how you connect it. Say you take NFB off the output; an extra coupling capacitor (to the CF) will give you trouble, however a cathode follower can be direct coupled easily, making an essentially invisible (electrically) buffer.
But that's an answer much too specific for such a vague question. I'd rather say something nonsensical like "battle of new orleans" in response. Tim
