Question Grundig Model 3265U Restore?

Hi Guys N Gals,

I just picked up a really nice Grundig 3265U desktop radio I am hoping to restore.

So far, Heres the Info I have. Replaced 1 Tube (Telefunken EBF89)
Was Literally cracked at base.
The Other Tubes, 2- EL95s, 1- ECC85, 1-ECH81,1-ECC83 ,And 1 EM84 tuning tube all test new or better.

Everything powers up, Theres a tape in and out jack on rear of chassis, I can confirm at least the output stage as functional.

Cant Get any sound from tuner stages?
No FM, No BC(am) no SW1 or SW2. Unit has a built in plate style antenna I am assuming either For BC or FM. Lightly taping the antenna terminals DOES produce a Tick. Applying a different antenna to jacks has made no difference.

There are some unusual to me anyways speakers inside. 1 of course a Stunning chrome looking 6X9 Telefunken gold label.

And on each end of the cabinet theres some kind of brown wafer speakers ( Brown about 3"x 3" X 3/8s +/-thick) possibly tweaters?

I hear a intermitent random low level tick coming from 1 of these I'll call them tweaters at Idle.

All the Buttons seem to be working, Just no music from tuner.

My Major Question.
Where To Start Looking?

A Physical inspection under the chassis has revealed nothing.
In Fact, The Unit is VERY clean and nearly 100% dust free.

I have spent over 12 hours the past 2 days trying to find a schematic download and have found nothing other than a few basic specs.
FM circuits 10 AM circuits 7 yada yada.

I just have no clue where to begin tracking down the problem.
Any Ideas?
Gene

Progress Sort Of ?

I located a couple caps between the tuner stage and amp stage that looked a little weird, White dusty looking substance on outside.
I replaced those with a couple orange drops And now Im actually getting some BC (AM) reception sort of.

Sadly, Its very weak and very distorted.
The Tape output is strong, So Im doubting its in the amp stage, But theres only a couple paper caps left in this thing. Most are these tiny little clear/aluminum caps. The remaining paper caps dont appear to be in a location that would relate them To any tuner circuits.

SO, Still digging, and no schematic.

Here’s a schematic:
http://www.radiopistoia.com/schemi_.htm

Here’s some tube data:
http://www.radiomuseum.org/dsp_model...model_id=23771

With this tube data you could try to measure the supply voltages.
Also look for high ohmic resistors who can be way out of spec.
You can be sure that almost all electrolytic caps will have to be replaced.
Also look for black capacitors, change them.

Here’s a fellow who knows a lot about these antique radio’s:

He’s a Dutch man but I’m sure he’ll understand English in a mail.
He’s very helpful.
And if you send him a mail, tell him to join the forum.

Good luck

/Hugo

I have replaced all the paper/wax caps, Had little if any effect.

This thing only has a couple electrolitcs, I replaced one, Now Its starting to improve. Now I need to replace the Can Style,50uf, 50uf,50uf. Not going to be easy.
Everything so far was done not having to pull the chassis.
Access via removable bottom.

Mostly progress today has been hampered by the flue.

But hey,, Its getting close!

I've not seen a 6x9... do they look essentially like these 7x11s?

I always thot these were Grundig drivers -- they have a particular style, and i've only seen them come out of Grundig kit...

I do know that there is a tendency to say West German stuff is made by TFK even when it is not.

Those are single ended electrostatic tweeters. They derive their bias from the plate supply.
