The preamp you referenced will work.

12AX7 tubes were used in some of the classic 50's and 60's tube preamps. However, most of them had cathode followers or were designed to drive tube amps with 250k input impedance.

For line stage duty, current practice is to choose more linear tubes, forgo feedback and pay attention to the power supply.. Also, tubes with lower mu are generally used.

There are a lot of line stages in the forum that look fantastic.
Check out Frank's Line stage, for example. If I were inclined to build someone else’s design, that’s one that comes to mind.
