Yes, Carver uses a similar system by where they overdrive an EL34, load it into a 5W resistor, then amplify the resulting sound with solid state.

But, 80mW? I get 3W from a SE EL-84. You should get LOTS more in PP.

It will sound like crap, unless you want it for a distortion generator for guitar. Build a gainclone instead.

Yes, except that it uses the +15V rail for the EL84 B+ too. Blech!
