Can anyone tell me if the 6L6 will sound good with 270 volts on the plate running in class A? Also, does it compromise the sound when multiple pairs are used in parallel?

The GE book says that 6L6 SE Class A plate is 250. G & GA & GB goes to 350 but 270 is good for 2 tubes PP in class A. PP AB goes back up to 360. So it looks like 2 in PP class A is your only choice if it is 6L6s you want to play with. I am taking it that the 6L6 is the old steel can that works at 250.

I got the 270V from the data sheets. It will be push-pull, with 4 parallel pairs of tubes-class A, for about 70 watts. I like the way the impedance requirement for the transformer primary is decreased with 4 pairs. I will be using a Plitron PAT4008- something like 1260 ohms primary impedance.
I was wondering if using 6L6's at this low of a voltage would make them sound bad. I guess it's really my only option for class A. I've read here that greater clarity is obtained with fewer devices in the output stage, but the topic was mosfets. Does anyone know if this is the same for tubes? |
