Hey guys,
I picked up many SIEMENS E80F with gold pins today, for a really cheap price.
They are all NOS, and NIB.
Would it be OK to put these in the place of EF86?

Default SUBSTITUTE????

Here is the link for the E80F data sheet:

Pin out identical, specs fairly close. They are probably close enough for this application, some twweking may be required.

First of all, that's one place I'd really recommend using a filmcap.
It doesn't have to 10F per se but can be either bigger or smaller, even composed of several small caps. Polyester cap would be a major improvement over the electrolytic already.
Hey Frank, would it be ok to use 5uf instead of the 10uf cap?

Or is it far too small?

I've got some Siemens MKV caps in my garage, and I wanna give'em a go rather than spending money on new ones

Cheers,
JayJay

That would be fine. The SIE MKV are among the best caps so give them a try if you like.

Cheers,

They are second hand though
Some damps can be seen on the metal body too

But they still measure 5uF without any internal / external short, and I'm gonna cover'em up with hammered finish paint

I heard they are quite expansive... Does anyone know a source where I can buy those Siemens MKV caps from

If the ones that I have right now work great, I'm gonna buy some new ones for my next projects, if the price is reasonable to my budget.

Oh yeah, I've found some Riken 220ohm 2W resistors for a reasonable price (cheaper than Angela Instruments, and A.I. don't even sell any 2W version).

Cheers,
JayJay

Talking Watts Up!

Hey guys,

Got any idea about how much power this amp would dissipate?

I need to know the power consumption, so that I can buy a correct type of PS transformer.

Default Transformer Recomendations

For Mono Version SS Rectifier Hammond 369GX,
Stereo Version Tube Rectification 370FX

A Pi style filter (Cap, Inductor, Cap) works best out of the rectifier, Single ended designs need very clean D.C.

I personaly would use 800uF caps and 10H inductor for something like this.

Hey,
Thanks for the recommendation, but I'm not gonna use any Hammond Tranny.

I just need to know the approximate power dissipation.
I'm actually planning to use a 6GV8 / ECL85 tube based regulator, which can handle up to about 40mA @ 250V (10W)

The regulator is actually designed for linestage PS, but I think it'll work out for tiny amps as well, as long as the max power is not exceeded.

http://www.the-planet.org/6GV8.html

The amp that I'm building gives out about 4.2W at the output.

With all due respect to Gary K. but I'd replace both the Zeners with a OA2 VR tube and readjust the trimpot for 250V under load.

Zeners are notoriously noisy device and hey...don't you love that blue neon glow?

The penthode section of the ECL85 is only good for 8W maximum.

Cheers,
