I took a look at the STA1. It's a line stage with gain. There are a number of things I don't like about the unit. For starters, it takes 0.2 V. of I/P to produce the full 5 V. peak to peak O/P documented. That's 10% of a CDP's 2.0 V. I/P. You would have a difficult time controlling the listening level. BTW, the 2.0 V. RMS a CDP produces is 5.66 V. peak to peak. Ignoring the STA1's sonic virtues or lack thereof, the unit would mate well with a phono stage that has 35-40 dB. of gain.

At 0.4 V. of I/P for full power O/P, the S5 integrated amp is quite sensitive. Still, that's only 1/2 as "touchy" as the STA1 is. The S5 might have a "hair trigger" volume control with a CDP, while the STA1 is almost certain to have the problem. The S5 will mate well with a phono stage of 40-45 dB. of gain.

build a 12b4a preamp, ..shouldn't cost you much at all (the power supply tranny (and choke, .. if you use one) will make up the bulk of the cost
