Lots of designs, both amateur and commercial, omit a coupling cap between a pot wiper and a valve grid. Many of them get away with it, although it is bad practice and leads to shorter pot life. In this particular design they made the problem worse by choosing a bad bias point for the valve thus almost guaranteeing grid current.
