I do not believe high current as long as it is not excessive strips the oxide coating off of tubes. It when high voltage is applied before the cathode has time to heat up can possibly cause cathode oxide striping. Tiny arcs across the oxide cathode can occur until the tube is warm. Cathode tube type rectifiers does delay the high voltage enough. Direct filament tubes does not. They apply voltage in a second or two.
