The FM3 from Dynaco is a very good tuner for starters, as there are very simple instructions on how to align the sections without having to use any special equipment. They are not very expensive and have a nice clean look. And most important they sound good as well. There is a volume control so you don't need a preamp and if you pull the volume control out from the faceplate it will play 2 ch mono which can be helpful in checking out speaker pairs. Be careful as there were a lot of tuners built that did not have a multiplexer for stereo and were set up to get one channel on AM and the other on FM so they will say STEREO on them, but aren't. A couple of good brands for quality and performance without breaking the bank are Shurewood and Fisher. I like the Fisher400 reciever very much myself and the FM performes very well, possibly the best of the recievers.
