A few people have built guitar amps using mains transformers (0-15-230V to 6 or 9V work well) for the OT and found they perform pretty well in that application, with no noticeable compromise.

That application is always on the lookout for cheap diy part alternatives. Another common 'cheapie' solution used is a 30VAC output PT with 15 and 24V taps and 2A rating - a multiplier is used to nicely provide usable B+ for 10-20W amps.
