Default simple design power amp.. wanted.

ciao.

have been looking around for a suitable
tube amp. design. many links here to chose from,
but i haven't found what am looking for yet.
am a totally newbie on amp designs
so i asking for some assistance.

what am after is a power amp. with tubes,
how big..(not realy that important right now..
that depends of A or A-B i guess.)

my main concern is ohm load, power usage,
simple design, cost.. and either it would be
single ended or a push-pull.. mainly coz.
i`ve heard SE amp`s have cleaner sound.
and these would be easier to assemble i assume.

help is appreciated.

ciao.

91.5 dB (2.83/1m)
nominal: 4 Ohm

it`s a Dappolito design..
i wanted to go back to 3-way earlier.. but my current
amp.. is capable.. but is a bit weak.
and beside.. i love the tube sound..

and to add.. i use only speakers
that has a nominal of 4.

Default need more info

I think for the folks to help here you need to give more info such as:

purchase or DIY? your skill level? experience level? how loud? listening environment? type of music? power requirement? You know, the basic stuff for everyone to consider in order to make suggestions.

Even with those speakers, some people would be happy with 2 watts--others would not consider anything less than 16 watts as adequate.

ciao.

OK.
of course it would be a diy..

skill level : as good as none..
this will be my first amp.
thus.. not totaly.. as most ppl. i grew up with a solder.

how loud : loud enough to get the "live" feeling.

enviroment : normal living room.. quite bigg. consist of
wooden panels which make it somewhat analytical.

type of music : mostly 60-70 rock.. some jass.. synth pop.. and
clasical from time to time.. NU-metal.. punk.. Black metal.
vinyl before 88.. cd after.

power req : my current amp. is a (ca) 2x75 in 4.. (Tr) it`s
bigg enough for 2-ways.. but i assume it would reveal some lacks
in a good 3-way.. thus the speakers am talking about would be
2.5 ways.. but will have a 3w. loading.

would this info do.. ?
(btw. sorry to not have mentioned this earlier.)

Default Kit

I am thinking a kit is probably best but something with some power. Probably would be satisfied with a push-pull in the 10-40 watt per ch. Probably be dissappointed with SET in the 2-8 watt range-but maybe not.

I cannot offer any kit suggestions for pp--maybe someone else here could.

Best of luck,
Rick

Try a single ended design. They are far easier to build than a push pull design (1/2 the complexity!) and sound great. They are the perfect choice for a beginner. Look at a kit, there is some great value out there, like the bottlehead stuff.

If you build, say, a single ended EL34 in pentode mode, you can easily get enough power, probably 8-10W. A triode like 300B comes with massive cost penalty. Use a little negative feedback to keep it linear, and you will have a great sounding amp.

I used a 3.5W 6B4G triode amp on my 89dB B&Ws and it was pretty loud, definitely filled the room with clean, sweet sounding music!

SE - clean sound? No, not at all. Good sound? Yes, certainly!

An SE amp has very high distortion at max. power (but very low at low levels), so I wouldn't call it clean - but it certainly sounds nice.

Here's my attempt at designing an SE amp: http://stiftsbogtrykkeriet.dk/~mcs/2A3.gif

Works well, but if this is your first project you would probably need more than just a schematic...

Best regards,

Mikkel C. Simonsen
