jackinnj, great article. I wish I had that old ARRL handbook, is it available on the net somewhere?
GAK, I'm using the old RCA riaa circuit from the RC-19 tube manual. One low noise 12ax7 per channel. A variation of it (with 12sl7, sn7) can be found on Bob Danielak's site: http://www.geocities.com/bobdanielak/phono.html

there are ARRL handbooks of this vintage (this one I bought when I was in grade school - 1964 - for $3.50) for sale on EBay all the time.
(there are 47 for sale at the moment.)
You probably want one from the 1960's.
