I may try that, but I will lose the loudness tap and also the balance is built into the pot as well. I is a very weird pot that I cannot find anywhere else.

For testing purpose, you could just bypass the entire control, using a series and shunt resistor per channel. Use 100k series and 10k shunt.
It's possible to do without a balance control if the volume pot is good, so you can replace that part with a standard volume control.
Some such controls will still have loudness taps, if you want that function.
