I have a Fatman 182 audio amplifier with has 7 tubes (2 x KT94, 4 x 6N3, 1 x 6E2). I've had it a number of years with no problems. A few weeks ago, the amplifier worked fine when turned on, then there was a 'pop' and I would lose one of the audio channels. More recently, I've been getting one channel only from the start.

My question is the following: Is this likely to be one of the valves? Could it be due to a tube being incorrectly seated? What can I do as an alternative to taking it into a specialist for repair?

I'm reasonably proficient with electrics/DIY, though as you can see, not a specialist in this area!

If the problem doesn't change with tube swapping you could have failed cap or resistor. Close inspection can find this kind of problem many times. Look for burnt or bulging parts.

Be sure the power is off and the amp unplugged for several minutes before poking around inside a tube amp. Power supply caps can store a charge for a long time.

If you have recently re-arranged your system (Plugging in your RCA connectors off & on)....the solder joints at the connectors will crack & you'll get an intermittent signal. Use a "big size" magnifying glass to see those tiny little cracks.
