5Z4 and 5Y3 are not equivalent, but they are similar and can often substitute for each other when warm-up time is not an issue. 5Z4 has an indirectly heated cathode; 5Y3 has a directly heated filament.

Another thing to watch out for is where the B+ is taken from. When a type with a cathode sleeve is employed, you MUST take the B+ from pin 8. When a directly heated type is used, a center tap on the 5 VAC winding is best, but either pin 8 or pin 2 will do.

Whoa those Brimar tubes are expensive

I should have some of those somewhere.
I really should start digging

Oh and those "Telefunken" 5Y3, I think they're Philips.

By the way, there is little use in matching rectifier tubes, the diode characteristic drop will have very little influence on the B+

Oh and there is one very rare globe type 5y3Gb but it was only made by one obscure French manufacturer.

that mean: "5z4g replace 5y3" is no problem but then, will be wait longer to warm the tube go to default value?

thank DF96, Eli Duttman, v4lve lover.
My ampli: monoblock ampex a692 (2x 6v6 + 5879 + 12au7 + 5Y3WGTA)
i buy them from a shop, and they were supported by 5Y3WGTA Sylvania tube.
if everything no change, just 5Z4G(or 5Y3GT) replace the 5Y3WGTA Sylvania tube, so is that a problem?
i afraid they'll on fire or false. let's give me advice, the best choose

Personally, 220 dollars for two of those used brimar tubes is way too much.

LANGREX has the same new tubes for 102 dollars

There's also the Russian 5C4S = 5Z4. 4 tubes for $20.95.

I would go for the Russian valves. It is only a rectifier!

I personally would do the same, what I was trying to say is that most of those auctions are insanely over priced, take for instance those Brimar tubes, the same tubes minus the admiralty sign where for sale at a respectable vendor, new for less than half the price.

Those Russian tubes should do well in his amp, I remember that there is also an ST variant of said tubes, he might prefer those.
